Advance Pain Management Course
Program Description
This joint Service course proposes that pain is a complex phenomenon mediated through mechanisms that involve more than traditional views. This course will focus on Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Opioid Therapy, the Interdisciplinary team model for comprehensive care in PCMH, Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Low Back Pain and will utilize metrics and literature to support clinical decisions. The overall goal of this course is to enhance knowledge, skill and judgment at an advanced level related to pain assessment and management.
Target Audience
This CE activity is provided by the DHA J-7 Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO). This activity provides continuing education for nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and physical therapists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Terminal Learning Objectives
1. Differentiate between acute and chronic pain diagnoses.
2. Describe the biopsychosocial model of care related to chronic pain.
3. Discuss chronic opioid and low back pain clinical practice guidelines.
4. Identify which patients are candidates for surgery and/or radiology. The intent is to reduce inappropriate healthcare utilization while improving quality of care and patient outcomes.
5. Use motivational interviewing techniques to move patient toward health behavior change.
6. Apply a team approach for chronic pain management and other various comorbidities.
