Virtual Health Care Ethics Symposium, 29-30 APR 2021 – DAY 1: 29 APR
Program Description
This activity is a two day virtual conference focusing upon the ethical aspects of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. An internationally renowned faculty has been compiled and will focus on various ethical aspects of the pandemic, to include: principles of triage/resource allocation, moral injury, moral distress and resiliency, health disparities, practical guidance for bedside clinicians, and the conducting of research during rapidly evolving periods of therapeutic equipoise.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, optometrists, social workers, psychologists, dentists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, registered dieticians, dietetic technicians, occupational therapists, certified counselors, kinesiotherapists, case managers, healthcare executives, audiologists, and speech language pathologists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the ethical issues of visiting the dying.
- Outline the psychological impact of dying alone.
- Identify and familiarize with the development of safe visitation protocols in pandemic.
- Discuss the American College of Surgeons code of ethics.
- Distinguish the ethical impact of dying in the current pandemic.
- Define how COVID has incurred ethical issues in military medicine and biosecurity.
- Describe key ethical domains of US military and international biosecurity engagement.
- Explain why and how a whole-of-nation approach may be required to enable such ethical engagement.
- Summarize the 4 types of Moral Reasoning and understand the differences among them.
- Apply each of the 4 types of Moral Reasoning to concrete cases and understand why each type could possibly arrive at a different moral conclusion.
- Describe the concept of moral injury.
- Identify peer support opportunities across the MHS.
- Summarize key ethical issues in allocation strategies.
- Discuss pros and cons of various allocation priority factors.
- Define and describe history of moral injury.
- Describe the ethical conflicts and consequences of moral injury in healthcare during times of crisis.
- Explore strategies to decrease development of moral injury.
- Discuss practical recommendations for leaders, clinicians, and individuals to support front line staff experiencing moral injury.
