Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care – Day 1: Trends, Policy, Assessment and Screening Tools

This course is grounded in the Addiction Counseling Competencies (TAP 21), which outlines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of professional practice. Participants will explore the transdisciplinary foundations of understanding addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, and professional readiness. This course is designed for nurses, social workers, counselors, psychologists, and healthcare professionals interested in gaining a deeper understanding of substance use disorders and their treatment.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for nurses, psychologists, social workers, and certified counselors. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  2. Understand how to evaluate current trends of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorder materials IAW Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, Text Revision (TR), American Psychiatric Association, © 2022; National Institute on Drug Abuse; nih.gov; https://www.adf.org.au; https://www.FDA.gov and Addiction Counseling Competencies (KSAs of Professional Practice, TAP 21).
  3. Identify the utilization and symptoms of each class of substance and its prevalence within each military branch of the Department of War (DoW).
  4. Understand how Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care (SUDCC) in the Army has evolved over the years.
  5. Describe the difference between behavioral health screening and assessment for substance use disorders.
  6. Given a generic description of a behavioral health screening tool, describe at least one tool to screen for Alcohol Use Disorder.
  7. Explain how a provider’s beliefs and attitudes can have positive and/or negative impact on a clinician’s assessment.
