May 2021 HS Nurses’ Week D05: Moral injury and compassion fatigue: The fall-out from a deployment in NYC

Program Description

This breakout is based on situations that both Lt Col Haver and Capt Hewett faced on their deployments to both Afghanistan and NYC in terms of dealing with compassion fatigue and moral injury.  They will discuss the differences between the two, along with signs and symptoms.  Finally, they will offer suggestions on how to help move forward on a personal level as well as how to help coworkers who might be struggling with these issues as well.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the needs of Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Social Workers, Certified Counselors, Healthcare Executives, and other health care professionals. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the difference between compassion fatigue (CF) and moral injury (MI).

  2. Choose three healthy options to help combat CF.

  3. Discuss how nursing contributes to CF.

  4. Explain how to make positive changes in the work environment.
