Cold Chain Management Practices in the DoD

Cold Chain Management is management of critical vaccines and pharmaceutical products to include the packaging, storage and special handling requirements of the medical material requiring refrigeration; the management of the shipment, and the oversight of the product from initial requesting agency to end user, in support of DoD personnel and operations.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for nurses, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe historical events of the implementation of cold chain protocols within DoD.
  2. Explain the cold chain system and how it protects vaccines.
  3. Review storage and handling equipment.
  4. Discuss DoD requirements for monitoring temperatures on vaccine storage units.
  5. Summarize inventory management; receiving protocols, and requirements for safeguarding vaccine inventory.
  6. Demonstrate the correct procedures for transportation of vaccines.
  7. Describe proper protocol in responding to vaccine potential compromise events.
