Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for nurses. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss breastfeeding as a public health issue.
  2. List the primary aims of the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding.
  3. Identify the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding that constitute the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
  4. Practice effective counseling and communication techniques.
  5. Utilize verbally and non-verbal techniques to establish a relationship, build confidence and give support.
  6. Support and validate a woman’s feelings about breastfeeding.
  7. Discuss appropriate follow-up and support related to the mother’s situation.
  8. Describe basic anatomy and physiology relevant to lactation.
  9. Discuss the baby’s role in milk production and transfer.
  10. Demonstrate appropriate breast care for the pregnant and lactating woman.
  11. Discuss two important reasons for counseling pregnant women about their infant feeding decision.
  12. List the required information that should be taught to pregnant women.
  13. Explain why breastfeeding is important.
