Womack Pharmacy: A Pharmacy Field Guide to Health Literacy: Improving Understanding, Safety, & Outcomes

This activity is a part of the Womack Army Medical Center Pharmacy Monthly Training Series. This iteration will outline the Pharmacy Field Guide to Health Literacy meant to improve understanding, safety, and patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define personal and organizational health literacy.​
  2. Explain why health literacy matters in pharmacy practice.​
  3. Identify common barriers communication patients face with medication use.​
  4. Describe how limited health literacy can affect medication safety, adherence, and discharge outcomes in pharmacy practice.​
  5. Apply plain-language and teach-back strategies during medication education​.
  6. Identify how pharmacy technicians can recognize confusion and trigger pharmacist counseling within their scope.
