Womack Pharmacy: Latest Updates in the Management of Migraine Headaches in Adults
This activity is a part of the Womack Army Medical Center Pharmacy Monthly Training Series. This iteration will highlight the latest updates in the management of migraine headaches in adults.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Summarize the pathophysiology and clinical characteristics of migraine, including different types (with/without aura).
- Identify common triggers and exacerbating factors for migraine.
- Apply International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) criteria for diagnosing episodic/chronic migraine and medication overuse headache.
- Explain mechanism of action, formulations, dosing, side effects, and clinical considerations for acute treatment.
- Evaluate when to add preventative treatment in patients indicated for prophylaxis, as well as understand the safety and efficacy of newer prophylactic treatment options.
- Relate latest guidelines to choosing acute and preventative therapies.
