Program Description

This is a live learning opportunity for medical providers presented for Grand Rounds at the Patriot Auditorium at Winn Army Community Hospital, Fort Stewart GA. This presentation explores the allostatic processes which often inform the subjective experience of “stress.” The author defines Allostatic Load (AL), reviews the biological systems involved in AL, and identifies some of the common biomarkers used to measure AL. Drawing upon a case study, the author identifies and discusses several of the risk factors for AL routinely found in female SMs. Data from the 2022 Health of the Force report highlights the intersectionality of sociodemographic characteristics of female SMs with elevated AL.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, certified counselors, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, and healthcare executives. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate a basic familiarity with the concept of Allostatic Load (AL) and awareness of common clinical presentations that deem inquiry into AL.
  2. Identify environmental factors, particularly sociodemographic characteristics, commonly associated with elevated risk for Allostatic Overload in female Service Members.
  3. Apply awareness of AL to clinical inquiry, laboratory assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
