ForwardWinn ACH Grand Rounds: Beyond the Latch: How Medicine Can Make or Break Successful Breastfeeding
These Grand Rounds are aimed at offering high-quality, medically relevant presentations to healthcare workers throughout the Winn Army Community Hospital footprint. Grand Rounds takes place every third Thursday in the Patriot Auditorium, and is video teleconferenced out to our Troop Medical Clinics. This activity allows our healthcare workers to improve clinical knowledge and patient outcomes. We present different topics with different presenters each month. Breastfeeding support extends beyond achieving an effective latch and is not limited to obstetric or lactation care. Medications, procedures, communication, and decisions made throughout the health care system can protect breastfeeding or unintentionally create barriers. This interdisciplinary presentation will provide evidence-based strategies that health care professionals can use to support informed decision-making, continuity of care, and improved outcomes for breastfeeding families.

Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, social workers, psychologists, registered dieticians, dietetic technicians and certified counselors across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Identify clinical practices, medications, and communication approaches that may support or unintentionally interfere with breastfeeding.
- Describe how different health care disciplines influence breastfeeding initiation, continuation, and maternal-newborn outcomes.
- Apply evidence-based, patient-centered strategies to improve interdisciplinary communication, care coordination, and support for breastfeeding families.
