Program Description

3-hour training for designated DoD MHS primary care pain care champions to prepare the pain champions for their role as pain trainer and consultant for the PCMH team, pain SME, Stepped Care Model for Pain (SCM) implementor for the clinic, and academic advisor. The training will define SCM for pain work flows, roles/responsibilities of those primary care team members actively participating in the Stepped Care Model for Pain, and job aids/tools for use in patient education and documentation.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dentists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, psychologists, social workers, counselors. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Document the DVPRS pain scale and pain assessment in the TSWF Core form.
  2. Document pain pathway elements such as long-term treatment goals and short-term SMART goals for pain in the TSWF Pain form.
  3. Describe key areas of evaluation and monitoring of the Stepped Care Model for pain clinical pathway implementation.
  4. Describe the responsibilities of the primary care pain champion during the Stepped Care Model for pain clinical pathway implementation.
  5. Articulate the goals of the Stepped Care Model for pain clinical pathway implementation.
