TBICoE: Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence Annual Brain Health Symposium
Program Description
The Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) supports a multi-center network of military treatment facilities and Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers with TBI education and research initiatives. In recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month across the Department of Defense, TBICoE will be hosting a virtual Brain Health Symposium in March 2023. This webinar will increase traumatic brain injury awareness and improve healthcare providers’ ability to identify, care for, and treat service members and veterans who are affected by TBI. TBICoE subject matter experts will discuss recent research in TBI cognitive rehabilitation, blast exposure, and mental health recovery. This activity will conclude with best practices for managing mTBI associated sleep disturbances, dizziness, and visual disturbances.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, optometrists, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Describe preliminary results from a clinical trial, reflecting efficiency and effectiveness of a cognitive rehabilitation modality.
- Describe the mental health needs of patients with chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI) symptoms.
- Appraise the access to and utilization of mental health care by service members (SMs).
- Analyze the influence of level of resilience on mental health symptoms among service members (SMs) with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) pre- and post-treatment.
- Evaluate the impact of mTBI history on mental health symptoms, both pre- and post-treatment.
- Outline the future direction of blast research.
- Identify treatments for insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders restless legs. syndrome, parasomnias, and insufficient sleep syndrome following concussion.
- Recognize commonly encountered post-acute mTBI dizziness and visual disturbances.
