TBICoE Quarterly Education Series: TBI: Military Branch and Job-Specific Risk
Program Description
Military job-specific risks such as blast exposures, combatives, and parachute or fast rope landings may increase the chance of traumatic brain injury throughout the armed forces. Awareness of service members in at-risk occupations can improve mitigation strategies and provider identification of traumatic brain injury and associated occupational exposures impacting brain health and performance. Early identification and treatment, regardless of what environment the injury or exposure occurred, is paramount to ensuring optimal outcomes for our service members. This educational activity, hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence and facilitated by researchers and clinicians across the DOD will dive into the TBI risks across our military branches and explore what the health services are doing to prevent and treat our service members.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, certified counselors,occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, kinesiotherapists, audiologists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss associations between military occupations and TBI risk across the DOD.
- Recognize occupational exposures that can impact brain health and performance of service members.
- Summarize TBI treatment modalities and specialty services providing premier care for active-duty service members.
- Analyze how the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Center for Medical Integration and Development advances prehospital medicine training supporting early identification and management of TBI.
- Explain how TBI was identified, diagnosed, and treated in a real-world combat mass casualty scenario.
