TBICoE Quarterly Education Series: TBI: The Female Experience

Program Description

This activity is hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) and will explore the unique ways in which brain injury manifests in the female population. Etiology, symptomatology, and diagnostic differences currently identified for female service members will be discussed. Presenters will discuss current research, clinical support for best practices, and barriers to care for females with traumatic brain injury. Resources to support females with TBI and their health care providers will be reviewed.

Target Audience

This CE/CME activity is accredited by the DHA, J-7, Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO). This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, optometrists, social workers, psychologists, certified counselors, kinesiotherapists, audiologists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Contrast mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) sex-specific differences as seen in current research and establish recommendations for policy and best practices within mTBI research execution.
  2. Explain female-specific risk factors for injury, diagnostic presentation, and interventions to improve recovery times and establish clinical best practices.
  3. Relate current research efforts to clinical interventions for female mTBI to optimize outcomes and advance current practice.
  4. Identify resources to equip patients and clinical care providers who support females with mTBI.
