Program Description: 

Maintaining warfighter brain health is a top priority in the readiness and resiliency of service members. Understanding preventative care and strategies to reduce Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) severity is necessary for prevention and mitigation of TBI, its effects, recovery time, and long-term complications. This educational activity, hosted by the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence (TBICoE) and in collaboration with specialists from the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF) and the Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP), will provide a comprehensive look at the elements of Total Force Fitness, modifiable lifestyle factors to influence cognitive reserve, preventative strategies for sustained health and performance, and evidence based tools to support the health of the service member.

This activity is a live-virtual event on June 20, 2024, intended for military personnel and healthcare professionals across the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, certified counselors, kinesiotherapists, audiologists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Summarize how principles of Total Force Fitness (TFF) and the use of Human Performance Teams (HPT) can support risk mitigation for service members.
  2. Identify the modifiable lifestyle factors that influence cognitive reserve and how they relate to traumatic brain injury (TBI) risk mitigation and prevention.
  3. Describe preventative strategies for sustained health and performance in service members.
  4. Outline the role of adequate, regular sleep in TBI prevention.
  5. Appraise evidence-based tools that optimize sleep readiness.
