TBICoE: Military Acute Concussion Evaluation 2 (MACE 2) 2025

Program Description: 

This course will train those in attendance on use of the Military Acute Concussion Evaluation 2 (MACE 2). The MACE 2 is a multimodal tool developed to standardize the initial evaluation and assessment of concussion. Use of the MACE 2 will help providers determine whether an individual has met concussion diagnostic criteria as outlined by the Department of Defense. This training will review the history and screening components of the MACE 2 as well as the four additional evaluation elements- a symptom report, brief neurological exam, cognitive assessment, and the Vestibular Ocular-Motor Screening. This in-depth training is a combination of didactic lecture, group discussion, case scenarios, and hands on demonstration and practice. Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Define traumatic brain injury according to the Department of Defense.
  2. Identify key features of the Military Acute Concussion Evaluation 2.
  3. Explain the importance of a thorough and accurate concussion evaluation by demonstrating performance of each test within the MACE 2.
  4. Describe how the MACE 2 standardizes identification of traumatic brain injury among service members.
  5. Recognize how accurate documentation and coding are essential for continuity of care.
