TBICoE: Beyond the Blast: Evaluating TBI Care in Operational Environments

This activity will explore the medical response to TBI after the 2020 Al Asad missile attack and more recent events. Providers directly impacted by these events will discuss challenges faced on the ground. The session will also provide a closer look at how the knowledge obtained may influence TBI protocols and prepare medical staff for future operations

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and athletic trainers. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand basic information about both blasts and blast waves.
  2. Summarize the acute care provided to service members exposed to potentially concussive events in a combat environment.
  3. Identify the symptoms experienced by service members because of blast exposure.
  4. Describe the different approaches to management of TBI from blast exposure in varied combat environments.
  5. Appraise lessons learned from identifying and treating TBI in a combat environment to optimize care and improve outcomes for service members during future operations.
