Tactical Sleep

*Requirement:The learner must complete the activity and pass the posttest in the DHA Learning Management System (JKO) prior to claiming CE credit. (https://jkodirect.jten.mil). The Access Code to register for the course will be provided upon completion of the course in JKO*

Note: in JKO, in order to receive the access code for this course, you must complete the “Curriculum” package, titled “DHA-US1197 Tactical Sleep Curriculum v2 (9 hrs)” as opposed to the individual courses. If you have already completed the 12 individual courses instead, then you may email all 12 of your JKO-issued course certificates to dha.ncr.j7.mbx.cepo-cms-support@health.mil, and our team will provide you with the access code.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and certified counselors.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review the stages of sleep by their clinical and polysomnography (PSG) characteristics.
  2. Describe the strategic use of caffeine and naps.
  3. Discuss when and how to use the psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) versus the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT).
  4. Outline the role of sleep on cognition and the musculoskeletal system.
  5. Learn tactics to help children fall asleep and stay asleep to improve parental performance at work.
  6. Utilize the actigraphy accompanied sleep log and provide treatment based on the result.
  7. Teach different ways to manage sleep apnea to patient populations and other groups.
  8. Distinguish between the two main types of home sleep tests (HSTs).
  9. Compare and contrast oral appliance versus continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment.
  10. Select devices with capabilities to address specific sleep-related disorders within patients.
  11. Examine ways to pull soldiers “out of the hole” using sleep tactics.
  12. Apply sleep tactics to enhance metabolic control.
