Stepped Care Model (SCM) for Pain in Primary Care
Program Description
This e-learning module aims to train military health care providers on the core competencies of integrating the Stepped Care Model in clinical care including identifying pain variables, screening using the Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale (DVPRS) and identifies psychosocial factors to understand patient values and circumstances by including psychosocial questions in a biopsychosocial assessment. It provides pain education, how to collaboratively set treatment goals and an evidence-based, comprehensive treatment plan to effectively treat acute and chronic pain. It also promotes non pharmacological treatment and how to prevent acute pain from becoming chronic. Finally it supports patient’s self-management and behavior changes along with tools to assist them in minimizing the use of opioids.
Target Audience
Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Psychologists, and Social Workers. A certificate of attendance is available for all other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the variables that perpetuate pain.
- Screen all patients for pain using the Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale (DVPRS).
- Identify psychosocial factors and understand patient values and circumstances by including psychosocial questions in a biopsychosocial assessment.
- Provide pain education and collaboratively establish treatment goals.
- Create an evidence-based, comprehensive treatment plan to effectively treat acute and chronic pain, promote non-pharmacologic treatment, and prevent acute pain from becoming chronic.
- Support patient’s self-management and behavior changes.
- Minimize the use of opioids and assess and minimize risk when used.
