Stepped Care Model for Pain: Primary Care Pain Care Champion Training
Program Description
The Stepped Care Model (SCM) for pain supports evidence-based, comprehensive management of acute and chronic pain for all enrolled patients. This workshop aims to train primary care pain champions to implement the SCM for pain in their patient-centered medical homes (PCMH).
Target Audience
This continuing education (CE) activity is provided by the DHA J-7 Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO). This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, kinesiotherapists, and healthcare executives. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Implement the Stepped Care Model for pain in their patient-centered medical homes.
- Train and mentor intake staff, primary care managers and other members of the PCMH.
- Promote and reinforce behaviorally-based treatments for pain provided by the internal behavioral health consultant’s (IBHC).
- Use data and evidence-based sources such as the VA/DoD clinical practice guidelines to provide consultative/clinical support for PCMH staff.
- Use updated Tri-Service Workflow forms relevant to the SCM for pain.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 8.00 continuing education credits.
