Stepped Care Model for Pain in Primary Care – Track 5
Program Description
Four-hour training for Department of Defense (DoD) Military Health System (MHS) primary care clinic staff directly involved in patient care of acute/chronic pain (Stepped Care Model for Pain). Activity provides guidance for the primary care team relevant to types of tasks performed during the work flow for treating patients who have pain, from identifying patients through screening through development of a comprehensive treatment plan. The training includes discussion of team-member roles and responsibilities, and communicating information with other team members.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Identify variables that perpetuate pain.
- Use the Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale (DVPRS) appropriately during patient care.
- Complete a biopsychosocial assessment of pain with patients.
- Provide pain education and collaboratively set treatment goals.
- Create an evidence-based, comprehensive treatment plan to effectively treat acute and chronic pain;; promote non-pharmacologic treatment; and prevent acute pain from becoming chronic.
- Support a patient’s self-management and behavior changes.
- (When opioids are necessary) Reduce risk of opioids by prescribing appropriately and incorporating other risk reduction measures.
- Determine the appropriate level of the stepped care model for a patient; connect patient with team members.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 4.00 continuing education credits.
