Program Description

A Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examiner (SAMFE)-Forensic Healthcare Examiner requires updated information on the Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examination (SAFE) in order to maintain currency and competency to practice as SAMFE-Forensic Healthcare Examiner. Upon completion of the training they will have acquired updated information to assist with their knowledge, skills, and abilities as a SAMFE-Forensic Healthcare Examiner.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, and nurses. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the Forensic Healthcare team approach, informed consent, patient centered care and trauma informed care.
  2. Describe how to perform a comprehensive physical examination and document findings for the sexual assault patient.
  3. Explain the management of sexual assault related trauma to include injury, behavioral health and counseling needs, consulting and referral process, and follow-up care.
  4. Outline drug and alcohol facilitated sexual assault in relation to best practices, patient history techniques and focused evidence collection for the sexual assault situations.
  5. Identify the circumstances in which toxicology collection and testing may be indicated for the sexual assault patient.
  6. Explain the purpose of medical forensic photography alternate light source (ALS) examination.
  7. Describe equipment considerations, application techniques, and documentation expectations regarding forensic photography and ALS equipment.
  8. Recognize how to produce precise, accurate, unbiased, and objective documentation for the medical forensic record for the sexual assault patient.
  9. Summarize how to identify, collect, document, preserve, label, store, and handle specimens to maintain evidence integrity for restricted and unrestricted reports of sexual assault.
  10. Discuss evidence collection considerations when conducting a sexual assault medical forensic examination for persons accused of sexual violence.
  11. Analyze local and state laws and restrictions related to the sexual assault medical forensic examination.
  12. Examine sexual assault health care treatment issues during deployment including remote locations.
  13. Assess human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted disease or infections (STD/STI) testing, prophylactic treatment and follow-up care for the sexual assault patient.
  14. Discuss how to assess the risk of pregnancy, provide options for emergency contraception, and any follow-up care and referral services for the sexual assault.
  15. Examine how to assess the need for behavioral health services and provision for a referral for the sexual assault patient.
  16. Restate how to conduct a physical and behavioral health assessment for the sexual assault patient.
  17. Identify the prevalence, signs and symptoms, mechanisms of injury, implications, management and documentation for non-fatal strangulation.
  18. Discuss the legal process of the sexual assault case and the sexual assault medical forensic examiner testimony.
