Learning Objectives

  1. Identify placenta hormones that affect Gestational Diabetes (GDM).
  2. Identify maternal and fetal complications of GDM.
  3. Interpret GDM screening results.
  4. Develop a plan of care for a patient newly diagnosed with GDM.
  5. Evaluate risks in ongoing care of a patient with GDM.
  6. Describe dietary recommendations to control GDM.
  7. Differentiate the medications commonly used to treat GDM.
  8. Prepare a plan for postpartum screening of a patient with GDM.

Major Heather S. Hubbard is currently assigned as Element Leader, Women’s Health Clinic, 55th Medical Group, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. She overseas clinic operations for a 17 staff member element that provide obstetrical and gynecology care to 6,000 beneficiaries, which also supports the largest DoD-civilian collaboration in Graduate Medical Education program. As Adjunct faculty, she manages the 160 hour Ob/Gyn rotation for 8 Phase II Physician Assistant students annually and Family Nurse Practitioner rotations from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

After completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, Major Hubbard entered active duty into the Army Nurse Corps as a direct nurse accession in September 2001 and was honorably discharged in 2005. Upon completion of her Masters of Science in Nursing degree, Major Hubbard entered active duty into the Air Force in 2007 as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She has served the Air Force in various positions such as Flight Commander and Element Leader.
