Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, optometrists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, kinesiotherapists, case managers, healthcare executives, and other health care professionals who support/care for U.S. active-duty service members, reservists, National Guardsmen, military veterans and their families.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the military's only child protection center by name and list at least two ways they can assist multidisciplinary professionals in assessing and managing suspected cases of child maltreatment.
  2. Describe the TEN-4 rule and how this applies to assessing injuries in infants and young children.
  3. Discuss the importance of the recognition of sentinel injuries in children, what they are, and why it is critical to know about them by listing at least one dangerous outcome of missing them.

Dr. Barbara Craig, USN, Ret.

Dr. Barbara Craig – (CAPT, Medical Corps, US Navy-Retired) is the senior board certified child abuse pediatrician in the Department of Defense (DOD.) She has worked at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda, Maryland for 23 years and at other military bases prior to this. Dr. Craig served for 32 years as an active duty Naval Officer pediatrician, and is now a civilian DOD employee in the same role as a child abuse expert. She founded and continues to be the Director the Armed Forces Center for Child Protection, the military’s only child protection center and child maltreatment consultation service.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Craig regularly works with multidisciplinary agencies including health professionals, lawyers, social workers, and criminal investigators. She serves as a consultant for the Department of Defense, the Coast Guard, and the Department of State including clinical assessments which include direct patient care locally and internationally, medical-legal case reviews, expert testimony, training, and education. She regularly testifies as an expert witness for both prosecution and defense in military courts-martial and other legal proceedings.

While stationed at Naval Hospital Bremerton, WA, Dr. Craig co-created the first DOD child fatality review team, the first medical rotations for military pediatricians to work with her to learn more about child abuse and neglect, and the first consultative service for multi-disciplinary professionals in the DOD needing assistance with child abuse cases. Now at Walter Reed and in the National Capital Area, Dr. Craig is the longest serving member of the Navy FAP Incident Determination Committee (IDC) appeals team (HRT) the longest standing medical representative for the DOD Family Advocacy Command Assistance Teams (FACAT), and the medical representative on the Navy and Marine Corps Spouse and Child Death Review Team.
