Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for nurses. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the need for anticipatory guidance for early breastfeeding, care of the breasts, and breasts fullness.
  2. Identify warning signs for potential problems.
  3. Describe the most common causes of nipple soreness.
  4. Discuss management techniques for breasts and nipple problems.
  5. Identify possible indications for supplementation of the breastfed infant.
  6. Explain the methods for teaching hand expression and using various types of breast pumps.
  7. Summarize the specifications for storing human milk.
  8. Demonstrate alternative feeding methods for feeding expressed milk.
  9. Recognize three pre-discharge breastfeeding issues requiring follow-up care.
  10. Select two follow-up resources available for breastfeeding families.
  11. Describe strategies for continuing breastfeeding.
  12. List examples of federal or state laws intended to protect breastfeeding.
  13. Describe the impact of formula marketing on breastfeeding success.
  14. State the role of breastfeeding in emergencies.
  15. Examine the evidence for the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
  16. Explain the process of becoming a “Baby-Friendly” Maternity Care Facility
  17. Discuss what “Baby-Friendly Practices” means.
