Progressive Return to Activity Following Acute Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK, - 16 DEC 2021

December 16, 2021

Program Description

This is a training for military providers facilitated by the TBI champion and/or local Regional Education Coordinator (REC). The presentation is a combination of didactic lecture, group discussion, and case scenarios. This training will provide information about the updated Progressive Return to Activity (PRA) Clinical Recommendation (CR) to DoD providers. Providers will use this knowledge to progress patients through the stages of the updated PRA protocol. Providers who take the training will progress through the training information and follow the stages of the updated PRA algorithm in order to prescribe treatment for service members who sustain a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). This  training information will educate medical providers how to use the updated PRA CR protocol, a recommended step-by-step approach to return service members who sustain a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) to duty. This will support a more standardized approach to military care following a concussion.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, and physician assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the key changes to the updated 2021 Progressive Return to Activity (PRA) Clinical Recommendation.
  2. Explain the rationale for using a PRA protocol for service members (SMs) post-concussion.
  3. Comprehend the criteria for progression following a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
  4. Recognize appropriate activities at each stage of progression.
  5. Apply primary care management strategies and specialty referral considerations to treat concussed SMs who are not progressing as expected.
  6. Utilize the Tri-Service Workflow (TSWF) mTBI Alternate Input Method (AIM) Form to document the PRA in the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Application (AHLTA).
