Pharmacogenomics Education Series for the Military Health System – Module 1

July 29, 2026

This pharmacogenomics (PGx) education module is a four-part series with each module to be delivered for one hour duration. This PGx education is designed to provide a structured, practical review of PGx and its growing role in optimizing medication therapy. The program aims to build a strong foundational understanding of how genetic variation influences drug efficacy, safety, and tolerability, while reinforcing core concepts such as gene–drug interactions, metabolizer phenotypes, and clinically actionable genetic results. By revisiting these fundamentals, the series supports learners at varying stages of PGx familiarity and helps establish a shared baseline for applying pharmacogenomic principles in real-world clinical settings. Beyond foundational knowledge, the series focuses on translating pharmacogenomic data into clinical decision-making. Evidence-based guidelines and resources will be introduced and utilized to provide a foundation for future PGx implementation. Through applied examples and case-based learning, the learners will review patients who can benefit from PGx testing, how to interpret patient PGx reports, integrate evidence-based guidance, and consider patient-specific factors when optimizing therapy. The final module in the series is intended to demonstrate to the learner how to order a PGx test within MHS GENESIS and interpret the test results. The overarching goal is to increase confidence and competence in using pharmacogenomics as a tool for precision medicine, enabling more informed, individualized treatment decisions, and promoting safe, effective medication use across the Military Health System.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, psychologists, dentists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and case managers across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe concepts of precision medicine and variations in drug response.
  2. Define pharmacogenomics and relevant terms.
  3. Recognize the correlation between genotype and phenotype.
  4. Summarize how gene function impacts medication response.
  5. Apply pharmacogenomic results to a patient case.
