Patient Safety Professional Course FEB 2025

Program Description

This instructor-led, virtual course consists of engaging learning modules and mentoring and networking opportunities. The Department of Defense Patient Safety Program designed this practical, actionable curriculum for new/entry-level Patient Safety Managers and other Patient Safety Professionals in military treatment facilities who have been in their role for fewer than twelve months. Learners will acquire basic knowledge and skills through practice in the following evidence-based patient safety principles: patient engagement; patient safety goals, challenges, and solutions; systems thinking, human factors, and high reliability principles; identification and implementation of evidence-based safe practices; building a culture of safety; measurement, data collection, and analysis; identification, mitigation, and reporting of risk; and legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dentists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and healthcare executives. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Describe the importance of Patient Safety as a field of study.
  2. Summarize the content included in the Patient Safety Program Course (PSPC) training as well as resource materials available to advance skills as a Patient Safety (PS) expert, as a leader in improving performance and measuring impact and in identifying and mitigating risk.
  3. Identify characteristics of a High Reliability Organization (HRO).

February 5, 2025

  1. Describe components of a proactive Patient Safety Program and ways to implement best practices.
  2. Explain how Human Factors Engineering (HFE) can support patient safety.
  3. Apply basic principles of HFE to improve patient safety at your facility.

  1. Identify three characteristics of the engaged patient.
  2. Describe the relationship between safety culture and high reliability.
  3. Discuss recommendations to meet the challenges of building a patient safety program.

  2. Describe the PS Professional’s role in reporting.
  3. Identify your role in assessing standards compliance.

  1. Describe the basic principles, pitfalls, and techniques of performance improvement measurement and analysis.
  2. Interpret basic graphs and charts commonly used in improvement efforts.
  3. Design a measurement and/or analysis plan to evaluate the improvement.

  1. Describe the difference between Comprehensive Systematic Analysis (CSA) and a Proactive Risk Assessment (PRA).
  2. Discuss common PRA methods and how they fit within a patient safety program.
  3. Select priorities that are important for you to follow-up on based on what you learned during the course.
