Orthopaedic Physical Assistant Introductory Course
Program Description
This one-week course located at Tripler Army Medical Center will provide attendees a broad overview of orthopaedic medicine and will aid Ortho PA staff in the selection of future candidates for the US Army – Baylor University Physician Assistant Post-Graduate Doctoral Program in Orthopaedic Surgery. Participants will work with Ortho trained providers on treating orthopaedic injuries and acute emergencies. Students will also receive lectures on orthopaedic medicine topics, participate in simulation labs, gain experience in orthopaedic ultrasound procedures, and application of casts/splints
Target Audience
This CE/CME activity is accredited by the DHA, J-7, Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO). This activity provides continuing education for physician assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Evaluate and understand the basics of MRI imaging in regards to the shoulder and spine.
- Evaluate the trauma patient in regards to pelvic and shoulder injuries. The presentation, imaging, and management regarding these injuries
- Comprehend the basic concepts of ultrasound imaging and the guidance for injections in the musculoskeletal patient.
- Discuss how to properly care for various upper extremity injuries by being able to apply various splints and casts.
- Outline how to properly care for various lower extremity injuries by being able to apply various splints and casts.
- Summarize how to properly inject the shoulder, hip, and extremity tendons using ultrasound guidance.
- Describe how to enter the operating room under sterile conditions and maintain a sterile surgical environment.
- Recognize how to properly don sterile scrub attire without breaking sterility of the operating room.
- Analyze basic evaluation techniques of the orthopedic trauma patient.
- Evaluate and treat the orthopedic patient for various foot and ankle injuries.
- Comprehend the sports evaluation for shoulder, hip, and knee in regards to various ligamentous and bony injuries common to sports and athletes.
- Identify the research design process and how it is utilized to produce the evidence-based medicine used today.
