Military Injury Prevention Research to Practice Education Series: Understanding and Strengthening Food and Nutrition Security in the U.S. Military

This series is designed to provide military medical providers and staff with information about a variety of topics related to injury and physical performance optimization. The series is managed and developed by the Military Injury Prevention Research to Practice Working Group. Each session features presentations from scientists or clinicians at key Department of Defense research and public health agencies that routinely focus on injury, physical performance, or health promotion.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician associates/physician assistants, psychologists, athletic trainers, registered dieticians and dietetic technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify outcomes associated with food insecurity and food access in service members from research conducted using the Military Eating Behaviors Survey (MEBS).
  2. Detail the rate of military food insecurity and how it compares to a similar civilian population.
  3. Outline the risk factors for food insecurity for the U.S. military.
  4. Summarize the Department’s current efforts to strengthen food security.
