Program Description: 

The Military Research to Practice Education Series is co-sponsored by Defense Centers for Public Health – Aberdeen (DCPH-A) and Consortium for Health and Military Performance (CHAMP) at the Uniformed Service University (USU). This series is designed to provide military medical providers and staff with information about a variety of topics related to injury and physical performance optimization. The series is managed and developed by the Military Injury Prevention Research to Practice Working Group. Each session features presentations from scientists or clinicians at key Department of Defense research and public health agencies that routinely focus on injury, physical performance, or health promotion.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and kinesiotherapists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

Exertional Heat Stroke Care in the Pre-Hospital Setting

  1. List diagnostic criteria for exertional heat stroke.
  2. Explain the role of pre-hospital cooling in limiting morbidity and mortality.
  3. Describe good, better and best methods for pre-hospital cooling.

Sex Differences in Biomarkers of End-Organ Damage Following Exertional Heat Stroke in Humans

  1. Summarize the spectrum of exertional heat illness.
  2. Explain the end-organs most affected by exertional heat stroke and the biomarkers that are used in clinical diagnosis.
  3. Discuss the differences in biomarkers of end-organ damage between women and men in response to exertional heat stroke.
  4. Describe clinical normal ranges for biomarkers of end-organ damage between the sexes and how our findings relate to those.
