Supported Employment offers numerous benefits for Veterans, including improved mental and physical health, increased self-esteem, better community integration, enhanced quality of sleep, a greater sense of purpose, decreased suicidal ideation, increased satisfaction with the VA, possible financial stability and independence, and higher self-efficacy. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model supports these outcomes through rapid job search, systematic job development by engaging with employers, person-centered vocational assessments to identify preferences, and ongoing follow-along supports such as face-to-face meetings with Veterans and employers.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the five core programs of VHA Vocational Rehabilitation Services, including Community Based Employment Services (CBES), Transitional Work (TW), Homeless Veterans Community Employment Services (HVCES), Occupational Therapy (OT), and Supported Employment (SE), and describe the purpose of each program.
  2. Explain how VHA Vocational Rehabilitation Service programs work together to support Veterans in achieving meaningful employment and community reintegration across a continuum of care.
  3. Apply knowledge of VHA Vocational Rehabilitation Service programs to identify appropriate referral pathways and resources for Veterans with varying levels of functional ability and employment needs.
