LTES: Restoration of Genuine Sensation and Proprioception of the Residual Limb with Targeted Reinnervation Techniques as a Mechanoneural Interface

Program Description: 

Targeted Sensory Reinnervation (TSR) which, in combination with a non-invasive vibrotactile device, effectively treats or prevents phantom limb pain. The loss of a limb is a life-changing event and affects the ability to move, work, interact with others and maintain independence. Ongoing pain, painful phantom limb phenomena and emotional trauma can complicate recovery. TSR addresses these problems by reinnervating the sensory nerves in the residual limb and creating a phantom limb map that allows the brain to receive sensory feedback from a prosthesis. This technique has shown promising results, reducing pain and improving the integration of the prosthesis and thus the embodiment of the prosthesis, with significant benefits for patients.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Understand the indication and the surgical techniques of TSR.
  2. Review how these techniques impact phantom limb pain.
  3. Utilize current approaches to restoring sensation and proprioception in upper and low limb amputees.
