Program Description

Course Description Winn Army Community Hospital is increasing the facility's scope of practice for LPNs to include intravenous push medications. To ensure safe practice, hospital education will provide an 8 hour training course for all LPNs prior to live implementation. The course will include safe medication administration, a pharmacy review of medications that will be administered, aseptic technique and intravenous complications. There will be case studies and practical scenarios throughout, and training will conclude with hands on demonstration and simulation. This training will occur quarterly to capture new LPNs in the facility and ensure all LPNs have an opportunity to attend.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for nurses. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain and employ the fundamentals of intravenous push medication administration to include 5 Rights of administration, utilization of tools to prevent medication errors, and proper use of aseptic technique.
  2. Describe various medications' therapeutic effects, adverse effects, interactions, and contraindications.
  3. Identify signs and symptoms, prevention, and treatment of intravenous therapy complications.
