Immunization Lifelong Learners Course-Short
Program Description:
The ILLSC is an abbreviated one-day face-to-face course. The ILLSC is designed to ensure health care personnel are trained in vaccine policy, vaccine safety, and effectiveness based on Joint Regulation on Immunizations and Chemoprophylaxis for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices guidelines and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for immunization practice. Recommended for health care personnel working within military hospitals, clinics or affiliated field settings.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Apply understanding of DHA Immunization Healthcare Division resources to meeting the challenges of military immunization care.
- Understand the mission and vision of the DHA Immunization Healthcare Division.
- Describe factors that make immunization care especially challenging and justify the need for special resources to support immunization care.
- Review how to contact Immunization Healthcare Specialist (IHS) in their area of operation.
- Demonstrate the ability to navigate Immunization Healthcare Division (IHD) webpage for vaccine and policy resources.
- Explain knowledge and capabilities of IHD Call Support Center (1-877-GETVACC).
- Review the importance of preventing vaccine-preventable diseases with immunizations during each patient visit without referring to the ACIP General Best Practices.
- Apply the highest quality of immunization healthcare during each patient visit by applying ACIP General Best Practices.
- Explain optimal vaccination coverage strategies when educating patients about immunizations during a patient visit.
- Summarize the common concerns associated with immunizations when educating patients about immunizations during a patient visit.
- Explain the three main components of an effective cold chain management program.
- Describe the six rights of vaccine storage and handling.
- Identify resources and tools to assist health care facilities in building and implementing a safe and effective vaccine storage and handling program.
- Integrate travel assessment, planning, and resources into a pre-travel clinic visit.
- Apply risk stratification specific to traveler and destinations.
- Describe vaccine-preventable diseases associated with travel.
- Review immunization recommendations and DoD policy for the protection of vaccine preventable diseases for travelers.
- Understand how to prevent emergencies.
- Recognize anaphylaxis and other medical emergencies that may occur.
- Outline treatment for anaphylaxis.
- Explain the need for a written emergency plan.
- Review the steps to develop a comprehensive emergency management plan.
- Identify minimum staff education, training and equipment requirements relating to emergency management.
- Review the role of CDC and ACIP in setting US standards for immunization policy and practice.
- Identify the role of FDA in licensing US vaccines.
- Describe resources available for updates of military-specific immunization policy and practice.
- Apply an understanding of all resources for US and DoD immunization updates to maintain expertise as an immunization lifelong learner.
- Explain the importance of immunizations from birth to 18 years of age.
- Summarize routine pediatric vaccines and implementation of the vaccine schedule.
- Apply the elements of the vaccine visit and measures to address patient needs, concerns, and education.
