Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for Military Service members (SMs)

Program Description

The “U.S Public Health Service recommends that clinicians evaluate their male and female patients who are sexually active or who are injecting illicit drugs and consider offering PrEP as one prevention option” for those with high risk activity which could lead to acquiring HIV (CDC, 2017). In Dec 2019 the Department of Health Administration (DHA) released the “Provision of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for Persons at High Risk of Acquiring HIV Infection” procedural instruction (DHA, 2019). This presentation will guidance within the military health system for the provision of PrEP, implementation processes, indications, management and resources.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, and physician assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define PrEP.
  2. Identify eligibility for receiving PrEP treatment.
  3. Discuss the indicators for the Military PrEP initiative.
  4. Evaluate the provider knowledge gap on PrEP.
  5. Summarize the current DHA standard for PrEP.
  6. Asses those at risk for acquiring HIV.
  7. Identify signs of Acute HIV infection.
  8. Review the basic steps for managing an individual on PrEP.
  9. Demonstrate basic education for an individual considering PrEP.
  10. Differentiate Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and PrEP.
  11. Outline resources for referrals and program initiation.
