Healthcare Provider Peer Support Training: Support through Transparency and Understanding

August 20, 2021

Program Description

The WAMC Peer Support Team remains available for healthcare provider support after adverse events or unanticipated patient outcomes with a common goal of changing a culture of medicine from deny and defend to one of transparency and understanding. This training prepares clinicians to appropriately support one another during times of great stress; encouraging a culture of mutual respect, trust and teamwork.  Studies show that burnout and shame from adverse events can negatively impact clinicians, teams and institutions and consequently, the quality and safety of patient care.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, optometrists, social workers, psychologists, dentists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, registered dieticians, dietetic technicians, certified counselors, kinesiotherapists, healthcare executives, audiologists and speech language pathologists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Compare and contrast the effects of adverse events on clinicians.
  2. Demonstrate the ‘second victim’ phenomenon and high risk clinical events.
  3. Summarize the evidence based process used to design and deploy the Peer Support Program:
    • Describe the six stages of second victim recovery.
    • Explain the components of the Scott Three Tier Model to design a plan to support personnel.
    • Demonstrate “First Responder” procedures and responsibilities, Peer to Peer.
    • Recognize limitations of confidentiality when providing peer support.
  4. Practice newly developed skills for providing peer support to colleagues.
  5. Discuss the stages of second victim recovery.
  6. Develop a plan to support personnel through transparency and understanding.
  7. Design ways to overcome the barriers (personal and organizational) to providing effective peer support.
  8. Utilize resources within the organization and community to assist with Peer Support efforts.
