2025 HCE: CAOHC Professional Supervisor On-Demand Pre-course Instruction
This on-demand pre-course instruction of the Professional Supervisor of the Audiometric Monitoring Program© (PS/A) course contain intermediate-level content. It includes chapters and articles to provide foundational development, and pre-recorded videos viewed on the CAOHC Learning Center. It emphasizes applications that physicians and audiologists encounter in evaluating audiometric and exposure records of noise exposed workers, managing technicians responsible for conducting surveillance audiometry, evaluating hearing conservation program effectiveness, and working as an integral hearing conservation team member in a variety of occupational settings. The course lectures review the current literature and practice guidelines. Instructors present employee case studies for participant problem-solving, critical thinking and small-group discussion. Case presentations discuss PS responsibilities, guidelines for managing problem audiograms and determination of work-relatedness.
Target Audience
This activity provides continuing education for physicians, physician associates/physician assistants, nurses, and audiologists. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
Learning Objectives
- Introduce the concept and structure of occupational hearing conservation.
- Discuss the role of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) in formal training and implementation of strategies for hearing conservation.
- Explain the structure and benefits of an effective hearing conservation program.
- Recognize different types of audiograms.
- Explain the components of the regulatory model which apply to hearing conservation programs (HCPs).
- Discuss “problem” audiograms, including standard threshold shift.
- Delineate the responsibilities of the Occupational Hearing Conservationist and Professional Supervisor for follow-up audiometric monitoring.
- Describe the critical role occupational and environment medicine physicians play in the prevention of occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).
- Describe factors that affect hearing protector attenuation and influence hearing protection fit.
- Correctly evaluate employee records for noise exposure and inclusion in a hearing loss prevention program.
- Establish Key Performance Indicators for all aspects of the hearing conservation program.
