Federal Advanced Skills Training-Limb Trauma (FAST-LT)

June 27, 2023 to June 29, 2023

Program Description

This activity is a skills training for clinicians involved in amputation and limb trauma care. This would include both the surgical specialties as well as the rehab clinicians. Morning didactic presentations will be reinforced by afternoon skills training in the anatomic teaching lab. This activity will be held on the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences Campus on June 27-29, 2023.

Target Audience

This CE/CME activity is accredited by the DHA, J-7, Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO).
This activity provides continuingeducation for physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe two indications for amputation or completion amputation.
  2. Implement three principles of the open, limb length-preserving surgical processes.
  3. Explain two examples of downstream sequelae of point of injury care regarding decisions/management.
  4. Assess for three common injuries that can be safely managed with splints.
  5. Identify the basic components of external fixation, including clinical applications and biomechanics that determine construct stiffness in the pelvis, ankle, and elbow.
  6. Summarize the basic science of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT).
  7. Define practical and advanced applications of NPWT.
  8. Compare external fixation versus splints in the limb trauma population.
  9. Justify helpful materials that can function for splints in low resource settings.
  10. Determine the appropriate time to place a vascular shunt.
  11. Compare the different types of shunts and the advantages of each.
  12. Demonstrate the key steps in placing a vascular shunt.
  13. Explain the challenges and pitfalls of vascular shunts.
  14. Identify the key steps to confirming adequate vascular bypass in the absence of a doppler in an expeditionary environment.
  15. Integrate current best practices in vascular, plastic, and orthopedic surgery into clinical practice to improve limb salvage outcomes from surgery to rehabilitation.
  16. Outline key orthopedic, vascular, and plastic surgical skills to maintain combat readiness and apply cross-specialty skills to produce best outcomes in limb salvage.
  17. Develop and refine surgical skills to improve amputation/limb trauma outcomes in combat care.
