Program Description

Ethics are an integral part of the scientific pursuit, and behavioral health providers are frequently confronted with a variety of ethical and moral dilemmas. The importance of sound ethical reasoning is especially important in the military behavioral health setting because decisions can have long-range effects which impact patients, leaders, health care entities, and the overall mission. What is the origin of our ethical reasoning? How do we make ethical decisions? How do decisions impact those involved?

Behavioral health providers use ethics as a way of guiding the service they provide as therapists, consultants, supervisors, and educators, but ethics are also an expression of values. Helping people flourish and thrive is seen in relation to society and the common good of all persons. How is this abstract ideal put into practice in a world fraught with imperfections?

This live, in-person course will discuss the philosophical origins of ethical studies and consider how moral and ethical dilemmas are further complicated in the context of military behavioral health. Using the American Psychological Association’s Ethics Code as a guide, participants will be offered strategies for enhancing ethical reasoning.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, certified counselors, healthcare executives. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.
