Dynamic Orthoses To Restore Limb Function After Trauma: Are They All The Same?

Carbon fiber dynamic orthoses (CDOs) are now a mainstay of care after severe lower limb trauma. They can be an essential component of efforts to restore a functional gait pattern and successful return to daily activities. Recent scientific evidence challenges long-held assumptions about how ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) work and the effects they have on gait. This session will provide insight into the role of care pathways and orthosis design on a range of outcomes in military and civilian settings.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Describe the latest evidence regarding how AFOs influence gait and offloading of the foot.
  2. Discuss how patient characteristics can influence the likelihood of positive outcomes with a dynamic orthosis.
