DoD Opioid Prescriber Safety Training Program

Learning Objectives

​​​Module 1

  1. Recognize the prevalence of pain and its impact on individuals. 
  2. Describe the components of the pain experience and DOD and VA strategies for pain management. 
  3. List the Six Essentials of Good Pain Care and the ways prescribers can integrate them into their practice. 
  4. Identify reasons for and approaches to ensuring patients properly utilize, store, and dispose of prescription medicine. 
  5. Describe how to assess risk associated with opioid therapy. 
  6. Demonstrate how to appropriately prescribe, taper, and discontinue opioids for chronic pain. 
  7. List the resources available for pain management.

  1. Identify risk factors for prescription medication misuse. 
  2. Define behavioral characteristics associated with Opioid Use Disorder. 
  3. Apply good prescribing practices when treating patients with chronic pain. 
  4. Demonstrate full understanding of the CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain issued in March 2016.
