The Dive, Maritime Medicine and Prolonged Care Course

July 11, 2026 to July 21, 2026

This course is a 10-day course designed to provide the attendee with a strong baseline knowledge of dive and maritime medicine as well as improve your ability to provde4 care in austere maritime environments. As a student you will earn your Open water, advanced open water and rescue diver dive certifications. This is a physically demanding course with much or the course spent in both closed and open ocean environments. The course ends with prolonged care scenarios where the student will provide care across multiple platforms in a maritime environment. Students must pass a final written exam as well as meet all NAUI skills testing to successfully complete this course.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, and physician associates/physician assistants across the Military Health System (MHS). A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explain the signs, symptoms, mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of nitrogen narcosis and high-pressure nervous syndrome.
  2. Classify the different types of diving operations and profiles utilized in the military.
  3. Summarize the primary training pipelines and locations for US military dive personnel.
  4. Use the appropriate military medical manuals to locate physical examination standards for military divers.
  5. Explain the composition and physiological indications of gases frequently used in breathing mixtures.
  6. Describe the physiological role of supplemental oxygen in the treatment of dive injuries.
  7. Recognize the clinical presentations of various forms of aquatic life that pose minor to serious risks to diver health and safety.
  8. Apply appropriate treatment protocols for various injuries and envenomations caused by aquatic life.
  9. Demonstrate a detailed neurological examination of a simulated diving casualty in accordance with Appendix 5A of the U.S. Navy Diving Manual.
  10. Interpret the core principles of dive physiology as they relate to the onset of common dive injuries.
  11. Discuss the unique logistical and medical principles of providing prolonged casualty care in an austere maritime environment.
  12. Execute prolonged casualty care protocols during simulated patient encounters in maritime environments.
