Program Description

The Defense Health Agency Public Health Chief Nursing Officer hosts a Lunch and Learn series for nursing staff assigned at DHA to provide an avenue for academic and professional discussion of articles of interest that transcend across PH nursing. This series disseminates new information to DHA public health nursing professionals, which they can share when engaging with Military Health System nursing staff. The events will be hosted live via a dedicated Microsoft Teams channel to allow for maximum participation. The April 2025 iteration educates clinicians on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or HIV PreP.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, and physician assistants. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply Defense Health Agency –Procedural Instruction (DHA-PI) 6025.29 requirements and updated 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) recommendations.
  2. Outline how to prescribe medication regimens that are proven safe and effective for HIV-negative patients who meet recommended screening criteria for Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation to reduce their risk of HIV acquisition.
  3. Educate nurses about HIV PrEP medications, side effects, contraindications, and Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved regimens to maximize safe use.
  4. Describe different tools Public Health nurses may use to improve clinical challenges that may present.
  5. Identify techniques to provide support for medication adherence to help patients achieve and maintain protective levels of medication in their bodies.
  6. Explain HIV risk reduction techniques, prevention services, and/or infectious diseases specialist referral resources.
  7. Identify recommended schedule for monitoring patients to detect HIV infection, medication toxicities, and levels of risk behavior to make indicated changes in strategies and support patients’ long-term health.
