DHA Infection Prevention and Control Fundamentals

Program Description

Infection and Prevention Control is one of the six Clinical Quality Management programs that work together to define, measure, assure, and improve the quality of care received by Military Health System beneficiaries. This live, interactive course addresses key knowledge, concepts, and skills all entry-level Infection Preventionists (IPs) share. Participants will discover how the IP role supports Defense Health Agency’s (DHA’s) goal to achieve zero instances of preventable harm, based on DHA Procedures Manual (DHA DHA-PM) 6025.13.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, physician pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dentists, dental hygienists, and dental technicians. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Verbalize at least three components of a successful Infection Prevention Control (IPC) Program.
  2. Implement strategies for standard and transmission-based precautions in healthcare settings.
  3. Define how pathogenic organisms spread in healthcare settings.
  4. Recognize the role of Antimicrobial Stewardship in reducing the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
  5. Describe applied surveillance practices for prevention of infections.
  6. Describe measures to prevent transmission of blood-borne pathogens.
  7. Explain the role of IPC for high-level disinfection of medical equipment and devices.
  8. Summarize the role of IPC in the sterilization of medical equipment and devices.
  9. Define the infection preventionist’s role as it relates to construction and renovation
  10. Describe how accreditation standards influence IPC.
  11. Identify the appropriate resources and evidence-based practices to support decision-making.
