Program Description

Food insecurity is an issue for some DoD families. U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service administers many nutrition assistance programs for which service members, Veterans, and their families with limited resources may apply. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) confer monthly benefits in the form of an electronic balance transfer (EBT) card, while school/summer meals and child and adult care food programs (CACFP) confer benefits through meals served at participating locations (e.g., schools, daycares). There are several simple actions that DoD healthcare professionals can take to help connect at-risk individuals and families to these programs.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, pediatricians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, registered dieticians, dietetic technicians, and health care executives. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Differentiate between food insecurity, hunger, and nutrition security
  2. Articulate current policy and advocacy initiatives addressing food insecurity among service-connected individuals and families
  3. Give examples of supplemental food programs for which military members or families may be eligible
  4. Compare WIC and SNAP benefits, eligibility requirements and populations served
  5. Apply the 2-question “Hunger Vital Sign” screen to their discipline-specific healthcare activities
