Department of Behavioral Health Winn Army: Differential Diagnosis

April 18, 2024

Program Description

The art of making an accurate diagnosis is important for both the patient and the practitioner. A differential diagnosis is important because it directs the behavioral health provider to rule out conditions that have similar symptomatology and ultimately lead them to find the cause of the symptoms and thereby make an accurate diagnosis. In other words, the provider complies a list of possible explanations for symptoms and then eliminates them individually.

This course will highlight these skills while also presenting some of the challenges about diagnosing disorders with common symptomatology including depression, anxiety, bipolar, or psychotic disorders. We will use a series of case examples to further highlight the challenges or differential diagnosis while also demonstrating that the tools and skills, when utilized properly, can help the clinician to make accurate diagnosis and help in the overall treatment of the patient.

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and certified counselors. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

  1. Identify steps to complete differential diagnosis process
