Program Description

The DHA Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) Competency Training is conducted for new DHA hires (psychologists, social workers, LPCs) working as BHCs in primary care. The training aims to familiarize new trainees with the PCBH model of care delivery that is used in primary care clinics. The training will have didactic components as well as the use of role plays and experiential activities to familiarize trainees with the unique skills required to function optimally as a BHC.

 

Target Audience

This activity provides continuing education for social workers, psychologists, and certified counselors. A certificate of attendance is available for other attendees.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the key features of the BHC Model (GATHER).
  2. Understand how to score and interpret the required Primary Care Behavioral Health screening measures.
  3. Describe the five steps in using the “5 A’s” approach to structuring an initial BHC appointment.
  4. Outline the components of effective PCM feedback.
  5. Identify required components of a follow-up BHC appointment.
  6. Differentiate between the specialty behavioral health role versus that of a behavioral health consultant (BHC).
  7. Identify an approach to ethical decision-making in primary care settings.
  8. Outline an efficient warm handoff workflow.
  9. Review 3 outcomes of a warm handoff: “Meet-and-Greet” interaction, Abbreviated Visit, and “Standard Visit”.
  10. Implement teamwork strategies in your clinic.
  11. Select an appropriate level of detail for presentations based on setting and time available.
  12. Assess a patient with suicidal ideation to determine level of risk and appropriate setting of care.
  13. Understand strategies to optimize utilization of BHC services.

    Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). DHA, J7, CEPO maintains responsibility for the content of the programs. DHA, J-7, CEPO designated this activity for a maximum of 24.50 CE credits. The instructional level of this activity is intermediate. There is no cost to participate.
  • 24.50 Social Workers (ASWB)

    As a Jointly Accredited Organization, DHA, J7, CEPO is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 24.50 Clinical continuing education credits.

    In support of improving patient care, DHA, J-7, CEPO is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the health care team. This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 24.50 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.

  • 24.50 Certified Counselors (NBCC)

    DHA, J-7, Continuing Education Program Office (CEPO) has been approved by National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6955. Programs that do not qualify for National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) credit are clearly identified. DHA, J-7, CEPO is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
