Comparison of the VOMS and SCAT 3: An NCAA-DOD CARE Consortium Analysis
Course Description
Vestibular and oculomotor symptoms in concussed athletes and warfighters are common, but current gold-standard sideline/battlefield concussion assessments fail to address common visual and vestibular symptoms present in acute concussions. This presentation discusses the Vestibular/Ocular-Motor Screening (VOMS), the only sideline assessment test incorporating both the visual and vestibular systems. Results from the largest acute-concussion study to date, the NCAA-DOD Concussion, Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium will be discussed, and evidence-based recommendations will be made to improve concussion care.
Target Audience
Optometrists, Physicians, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists
Learning Objectives
1. Highlight connections between and often underestimated prevalence of Sports- and Operationally-Related Concussions for the general population and US Warfighter populations.
2. Discuss the results of a recent NCAA-DOD CARE Consortium analysis examining the predictive accuracy of VOMS in comparison to the SCAT 3, including how this compares to the MACE 2 (US Military version of SCAT 3).
3. Associate the results of the recent study in terms of battlefield/acute assessments strategies, including impact on return-to-duty/activities of daily living, and operational readiness.
