Learning Objectives

  1. Generalize the impact of existing studies of early use of palliative care on patient-reported outcomes, mood, resource utilization, and survival in patients with cancer.
  2. Implement palliative care in the population of patients with cancer for whom palliative care is appropriate to consider.
  3. Employ best practices for palliative care in cancer survivors.
  4. Describe the performance of VA on oncology end-of-life measures.

Michael J. Kelley, MD is Professor of Medicine at Duke University, Chief of Hematology and Oncology at the Durham VA Medical Center, and National Program Director for Oncology for the Veterans Health Administration.

He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Duke University and fellowship in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute where he also was Senior Clinical Investigator and Research Fellow.

As National Program Director for Oncology for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Kelley directs policy and program development that affect the more than 50,000 Veterans diagnosed with cancer each year in the nation’s largest integrated health care system. He was among the VA’s leaders who contributed to the White House Cancer Moonshot Initiative in 2016 and has provided testimony to the President’s Cancer Panel.

Dr. Kelley is an author of more than 100 peer-reviewed primary research articles. He is a recipient of the US Public Health Service’s Achievement Award and inventor for one patent.
